Reel to reel molding, or strip molding, is used to mold plastic parts that require sequential and automatic assembly but are difficult to orient or align.

How Reel to Reel Molding Works

Reel to reel molding is a versatile technology that allows for great precision in the manufacture of tiny components. It is especially useful for the electronics industry.

The process involves two reels – a feed reel and take-up reel.

A continuous carrier strip containing a line of parts is indexed and fed from the feed reel through the injection molding machine.

Plastic is molded over the parts on the strip and the strip is fed onto the take-up reel.

In general, there are three types of carrier media used in the continuous insert molding mechanism:

  • metal stamping or lead frame,
  • mylar tape
  • or molded carrier strip.

With this diversity of media, reel to reel molding allows us to create a wide assortment of parts combining different materials.

We deliver the parts to you on the take-up reel, ready for insertion into your automated assembly line, or in single parts.
